The research consistently showed a positive relationship between grip strength and marksmanship up to a certain level. Moreover, while anxiety can negatively impact shooting accuracy, training in stressful conditions appears to mitigate this effect. It’s worth noting that this improvement may be temporary and last around four weeks. Therefore, it is crucial to prioritize training efforts to maintain these advancements. Overall, these factors suggest that comprehensive and realistic training can significantly enhance shooting accuracy, speed, and precision— in high pressure situations.

That’s what we want to avoid.

As an Army Sniper, I used a relaxed grip on the M24, Remington 700, with my thumb resting along the stock rather than wrapped around it. I learned that an effective grip with a bolt action rifle relies more on body position, support hand, and proper shoulder and cheek weld. In contrast, shooting a pistol relies heavily on grip strength since it’s only supported by your two hands.

Every shooter starts by recognizing their own strengths and weaknesses. For new gun owners one common obstacle is developing the necessary grip strength, for precise shooting. No need to worry; overcoming this obstacle is easily achievable through practice and employing the techniques.

How can you determine if your grip is sufficiently strong?

Begin by holding your firearm in a shooting position and while you shoot slowly, have a friend or instructor video your grip with their phone. When you play it back does your grip break? By that I mean do your hands separate with the recoil of the handgun? How quickly do your hands fatigue? Do you experience hand tremors? Do you feel any strain? Do you have trouble running your slide? All these are indicators of a weak grip and video is a great tool to determine if your strength requires improvement.

 

Factors that Affect Grip Strength

Age, injuries, and physical fitness all have an impact on grip strength. It’s important to recognize that grip strength varies among individuals and what may work for one person might not be effective for another. The objective is to strike a balance and develop a relaxed but firm grip.

 

Exercises to Improve Grip Strength

 

Simple yet Effective Exercises

You don’t need equipment to enhance your grip strength. Basic exercises such as squeezing a tennis ball or using hand grippers can yield results. I suggest incorporating these exercises into your routine; dedicating just a few minutes each day can lead to significant enhancements.

Exercises for Home or Gym

Performing finger exercises, wrist curls or forearm workouts at the gym can contribute towards developing a stronger grip. These exercises not only improve your grip strength but also enhance overall arm stability, which is crucial for shooting accurately and managing recoil.

Practicing wrist curls regularly has been beneficial for me in improving my accuracy especially when taking shots at a greater distance.

 

Developing Muscle Memory

Repetitive practice with the right grip helps develop muscle memory. This means that when you’re under pressure your hands will automatically find the correct position resulting in faster and more accurate shot placement.

 

 

Maintaining Consistency with Your Grip

Maintaining a consistent grip every time you shoot is vital for developing muscle memory and improving accuracy. This uniformity allows for easier troubleshooting; by repeating your shooting process in the same manner, you can make incremental changes to identify what techniques are effective and which ones need improvement.

Tools and Equipment to Enhance Your Grip

Think about using shooting gloves or grip aids like grip tape to tailor your handgun grip to your personal preferences, especially if you have smaller or weaker hands. However, keep in mind that most firearm engineers and designers did a pretty good job designing ergonomic grips. If your current pistol grip doesn’t suit you, modifying it might not always be the best solution. Instead, consider experimenting with different brands or models of handguns to find a better fit.

I recommend to all my new gun owners or inexperienced clients to rent a few different kinds of handguns before they make a purchase. It can save you hundreds of dollars and hours of frustration.
